my friends fall like fireworks
far and away
on Flatbush and ‘Frisco
some cafeteria tray
like toothpicks or tinsel
that pierce as they spray
those unfathomable distances
there in the gray
they snarl and snaggle
at me where i lay
(i haven’t been traveling
any which way)
