Bob Mould admitted he was nervous. He hadn’t played out since early November. And as he jostled with one of the microphone cables, a wisp of feedback bit the air. Someone in the audience whew-hewed him on.
“I’m not even sure what to play,” he said. “Is this loud enough?”
“Nah louder,” some guy barked. “Louder!”
A chord surged up from Mould’s Blackstar amp. “That better?”
“Oh, yeah!” the guy cried, and the rest of us followed.
“It’s a little early, I guess,” Mould smirked, “but — ahhh well –“
And he stepped up and stammered:
“Standing on the edge of the Hoover Dam…
I’m on the centerline…
Right between two states of mind….
